Following the formal resignation of the sitting MP Alun Michael (announced on 22 October 2012),〔("Alun Michael stands down as Cardiff South and Penarth MP today" ), ''Wales Online'', 21 October 2012.〕 a by-election for the Cardiff South and Penarth Westminster constituency was held on 15 November 2012.〔(Upcoming elections ) Cardiff Council〕 The vacancy arose because Alun Michael was selected as the Labour Party candidate in the Police and Crime Commissioner Elections which were also held on 15 November 2012.
